Perhaps no other outdoor chair is as classic or iconic as the Adirondack chair.  First built in the early 1900’s by Thomas Lee, he designed it while on vacation at his summer home in the Adirondack mountains (hence the name).  The original design consisted of  11 pieces of wood arranged with a straight back and angled seat to sit comfortably in a relaxed position.  (Note: Adirondack chairs are sometimes also referred to as Muskoka chairs).

Today’s Adirondack chairs are a little more innovative in their design and often come with a contoured seat.  Many manufacturers have taken the original design and translated it into other pieces such as gliders and love seats.  Besides wood, Adirondack chairs have recently been built from engineered wood and plastic.

If you’re considering adding a piece of furniture to your backyard space you should consider an Adirondack chair.  Besides being fairly inexpensive, a pair of them together look great.  In short, they are the perfect outdoor chair to sit back and relax while reading a book on that perfect summer day.
